Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that it is working on its own strong hybrid powertrain for its future offerings, especially in the entry and mid-level segments. This hybrid technology will be different from Toyota’s series parallel hybrid system, and will be significantly more affordable. The Maruti Fronx will be the first model to feature the brand’s in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain. While its official launch timeline is yet to be announced, the model is likely to go on sale in 2026.
Upcoming Hybrid Maruti Cars
Upcoming Hybrid Maruti Cars | Expected Launch |
Maruti Fronx | 2026 |
Maruti Baleno | 2026 |
Maruti Swift | 2027 |
Maruti Brezza | 2029 |
The new-generation Maruti Baleno will be the second in line, followed by Maruti Suzuki’s all-new sub-4 metre MPV. The upcoming Baleno is likely to receive comprehensive design and interior updates along with a petrol-hybrid powertrain. The new compact MPV is reported to be based on the Suzuki Spacia, which is already on sale in Japan. Both these models are expected to hit roads sometime in 2026. This will give Maruti Suzuki three different types of hybrid powertrains in its product lineup by 2026: mild hybrid, its own strong hybrid and the Toyota-sourced hybrid system.
Maruti’s top-selling Swift hatchback and Brezza subcompact SUV will also benefit from the new series hybrid technology. The new-generation Swift will go hybrid in 2027, while the next-gen Brezza will debut with Maruti Suzuki’s new hybrid tech in 2029. Both models are likely to come with comprehensively improved styling and interior.
How Maruti’s Strong Hybrid Tech Will Work?
The Indo-Japanese automaker is developing a series hybrid setup that functions only as a generator or range extender. The electricity produced by the hybrid system will directly power an electric motor that drives the wheels, making it simpler configuration than the series-parallel setup. Maruti’s high-end SUVs will continue to be powered by the Toyota-sourced strong hybrid system. The carmaker will introduce its new hybrid system with the Z12E, three-cylinder petrol engine that currently powers the Swift. According to reports, the upcoming hybrid Maruti cars will deliver a mileage of over 35kmpl.
